If you or someone you know is having a baby and are at all curious about natural birth, this amazing water birth documentary is a must-see:
Birth Into Being was created by Elena Tonetti-Vladimirova, and follows five natural births – including two women who give birth in the Black Sea. There are some incredible scenes of babies and children swimming with dolphins in the open ocean. There is also a more recent DVD, Birth As We Know It, which features 11 natural births.
These are complete birth videos, so consider yourself warned: they are not for the squeamish! Both DVDs are available on Elena’s website.
I’m not sure how I would feel about giving birth in the ocean! Regardless, this documentary certainly opened my eyes to a whole new realm of birthing experiences that I did not even know were possible.
What do you think? Would you ever consider having a water birth? What about a water birth…in the open ocean? I would love to hear your thoughts – post a comment below.

I have just been introduced to this site by a fellow mama friend – thanks V!
I gave birth to my son Oscar, six months ago, and was fortunate enough to have a water birth in a midwifery-led unit, which I was very keen on. Throughout my pregnancy I swam and in the beginning stages of labour the water was so soothing. I needed no other drugs (just gas and air), my midwife was a dream and as my husband was also there, honestly felt so natural.
I suffered terrible backache throughout my pregnancy and was terrified of the birthing process and the thought of not having control / being bedbound just did not appeal to me. Not to say I am a hero for opting drug-free, far from it, but the floating sensation, absolutely no pressure on my back – yes even while pushing! (you just feel the pain elsewhere!)- was seriously the most amazing thing I have ever done. You are also alone in the bath with midwife and hubby coaching from the side so if youre like me and love the water, your privacy and are up for an alternative way of bringing your bundle of blessings into this world, I would recommend a water birth anyday!
Thanks, MrsMaddyO! I am so happy to hear a successful water birth story! I had never really thought about the feeling of privacy you would have in the bath, but I’m glad you mentioned it – I can imagine it feels very safe and comforting.
It’s so funny how in the States, water birth aren’t considered mainstream. My insurance wouldn’t cover it but I would have if it did. I think Maddy told me that in England water births are the norm.
