Rain Day/Snow Day

in Teacher Tips & Tricks,The Project File

It is rather rainy and blustery in my neck of the woods today, so I thought I’d share two activities – one quiet, and the other active – to keep the little ones busy when you are stuck inside.

First we have this beautiful example of a snowflake curtain, made by Lupin, an artist/crafter and blogger in the UK. You can see more of her snowflake curtain here, as well as more crafts on her blog bugs and fishes by lupin; and she has an adorable etsy shop! Obviously, if your children are the ones doing the making it will look quite different – but still charming! She used thread to stitch the snowflakes together, but you can use fishing line or whatever else you have on hand. I like how she used different sizes of paper, it makes it look more natural. This is the sort of project that older kids can really throw themselves into. I would also let them choose where to hang the garlands – It could be in the windows as Lupin did here, but what about from the ceiling in your child’s bedroom?

And for kids who need to move? It’s obstacle course time! Use the biggest room in your house or apartment to set up the course, and move breakables out of the way the best you can. Try to include all of these movements in your course:

  • Crawl through (Tunnel/Cardboard box with bottom removed/Under a coffee table)
  • Balance on (Balance beam/Line of tape on the floor)
  • Jump off (Sturdy chair/Sofa/Cushions/Crate)
  • Climb over (Pile of pillows/Laundry basket)
  • Around and Around (Chair/Basket/Suitcase)

Demonstrate the course the first time through – if nothing else, it will surely put your children in a good mood seeing you run around chairs and squeeze under the coffee table! I literally have never met a child who didn’t love obstacle courses. Most kids will go around and around until they are completely exhausted!

Hope you enjoyed these Rain Day/Snow Day ideas; I will be posting more of these throughout the winter.
