So, you know how nice wood play kitchens are pretty darn expensive? Apparantly, parents have started taking things into their own hands, and have come up with quite a few creative ways to make a DIY play kitchen. There was this post on Apartment Therapy Ohdeedoh, which featured a kids kitchen made from IKEA components. But what if you don’t live near an IKEA? Then I saw this one, made by the parents who write the Wee Gallery blog as a Christmas gift for their daughter:
I don’t know about you, but I love it! They made it using a simple 2-cube wooden shelf from a craft store, plus scrap wood cut to fit from Home Depot.

The “shelves” on the backsplash are made from a CD organizer with a few hooks tacked to the bottom, and the whole thing cost them about $60. They have included a nifty little instruction sheet that you can use to make your own. Get it & read the post here.
But what if you don’t want to buy new wood and construct it from scratch? How about this idea from Craftster: Take an old entertainment center (your own or a used one picked up for cheap/free), do a few alterations, and you get this:

Would you try building something like this? Personally, I would scour the used toy shops and yard sales before comitting myself to a big project. But…if I couldn’t find the right one, I would definitely give this a go rather than get a brand new spendy one (the little kitchens at Pottery Barn are $250 and up!) What do you think?

That is so cute! I remember when my daughter was little, she LOVED her little play kitchen. How incredibly cool to make your own.

Wow, I love the used entertainment center idea. We have one we’re going to get rid of here soon to get a wall mounted flat screen so I’d love to hang onto it and turn it into a play kitchen!!!
