Alison - good advice! It is truly amazing to watch and learn from the pros - I especially love watching professional storytellers who tell all of their stories from memory; it never ceases to amaze me!

For me, the only way I can get my son to sit through a story is if I use voices. Even then once he knows the story, he usually starts to act it out as I'm reading it and no longer sits and listens. I think I have a performer of some type brewing! lol

To me, as a parent who wants to be a good storyteller, one of the most helpful things is to hear another adult read a story. I'm talking here about people who really know their stuff, like experienced children's librarians and actors reading for books on tape/CD. There is nothing like having a experienced 'mentor'.
